Misoko-sensei! A delivery came while I wasn’t at home and all they left was a piece of paper… most of it is in Japanese so I’m not sure how to get my package redelivered.
Don’t worry, I’ll teach you how to apply for redelivery with the three biggest shipping companies in Japan: Yamato, Sagawa, and Japan Post.

Applying for Package Redelivery Online with Yamato, Sagawa, and Japan Post

Your packages are rarely stolen in Japan because they require signatures. However, what happens when you are not home to sign for your mail? How do you get your package? What’s with all the numbers and kanji on the redelivery slip? In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about package redelivery in Japan in the simplest way possible.

Yamato

Yamato Transport has a solid English website to go through—just click the English button in the top right corner of the home page. From there, navigate to the “Request Redelivery” page, and you’re set.

The only part you need to pay attention to on the front side of the redelivery slip is the portion marked “B.” It is already written in English so does not require much explanation, but it should be noted that Yamato will give you the redelivery slip even if they have put the package in your post box. You will find the “Delivered to Delivery Box” checked off in this case, and you can go grab your package from the post box.

Also keep in mind that Yamato will hold your packages for one week, so be sure to request redelivery within that time.

If your package is in need of redelivery, all you need is the tracking number (E).

Input the required information as well as your tracking number into the required fields. Follow the instructions on the Contact Us page. In the message section, write “Redelivery” at the beginning followed by your available dates and time slots. After submitting, your package will be set for redelivery.

Yamato also has a toll free number that allows you to apply for redelivery by phone. You will be connected to an answering machine that will ask you to input your tracking number, whether you want your item redelivered or want to go pick it up yourself, your desired redelivery date, desired delivery time slot, and your phone number (in that order).

Sagawa

Sagawa is another shipping company with a complete English guide on how to redeliver your packages. You can apply for redelivery by phone or through the internet.

Sagawa

Just as the picture indicates, all you need for redelivery is the tracking number and the sales office number.

You can find the redelivery request website for Sagawa here. Input the two numbers, the rest of the required information, and you’re set for redelivery.

Japan Post

Japan Post has a series of videos that you can use for reference when you want your package to be redelivered, but they contain a lot of information that may be difficult to understand. There is also no complete English version of the website for redelivery and it may look daunting at first.

There are two parts of Japan Post’s redelivery slips. One includes the tracking number, and the other includes redelivery information.

You can find your tracking number where 追跡番号 is written in Japanese. Also be mindful of the 保管期限, the date by which you need to have picked up/scheduled redelivery of your package.

Apply for redelivery from Japan Post through this website. You will first be asked to input your tracking number.

Depending on the type of package, you will be asked to select the type of mail. You can find it marked at the 6 in this picture.

The website will look something like this. Choose based on what is marked on your redelivery slip. If nothing is marked, select 不明(記入なし).

At this step, you need to select how you want your package to be redelivered. The options are all written in Japanese so it may look confusing, but in most cases you are the one who will be accepting the package, so you will most likely choose the first option.

After this, select your desired redelivery date and time, enter the personal information you are asked for (zip code, phone number, etc.) and you will be good to go!

Another Option: Contacting Toll Free Numbers

Yamato’s toll free number is written on their webpage and provides English service, but other companies like Sagawa only provide automated scheduling for redelivery in Japanese. You will have to know at least a little bit of the language to work your way through the automated system, but this option is a little easier than entering in all your information and applying over the internet.

Another Option: Contacting the Driver by Phone

This article covered the process of package redelivery with three major companies: Yamato, Sagawa, and Japan Post. For those who are confident in their Japanese abilities, calling the phone number written on the delivery slip and asking the driver directly if they will redeliver your package is also an easy and effective way to get your packages quickly. We hope this article helps anyone who is struggling with redelivery procedures!
