What to do if you test positive for COVID-19

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare, if you test positive for COVID-19, you will be directed to check in to a hospital. However, if you are only experiencing light symptoms, you may be asked to undergo treatment at other facilities like hotels, or self-quarantine at your place of residence.

Please consult with your doctor about how to proceed if you test positive.

You may be able to cut costs using health insurance. How and when does it apply?

If you are able to apply health insurance when you get a PCR test, you may be able to cut down costs to about 2,000 yen.

However, a doctor must first deem it necessary for you to get a PCR test in order to for health insurance to be applicable. Even if you have a fever that you think may be related to COVID-19, if a doctor does not recommend you to get a PCR test, you will not be able to use your health insurance. For more details, refer to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's website.
